10616 Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) – Map of The City of Saint-Domingue – Engraving (circa 1754)
This topographical work is a bird's-eye view of the city of Saint-Domingue, which corresponds to the present-day Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The engraving depicts the fortified city situated on a harbor, with a distinct urban layout of blocks and streets surrounded by a wall on the land side. The foreground and sides of the harbor show several large sailing ships, indicating the city's importance as a major port and colonial center. This illustration was published in the monumental work Histoire Générale des Voyages by Antoine François Prévost.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a highly important French hydrographer and geographer of the 18th century. He served for fifty years at the French Hydrographical Office and was appointed Official Hydrographer to the French King. Bellin was a member of both the Académie de Marine and the Royal Society of London. He was known for his extensive and detailed output of maps and charts, including those for his own Petit Atlas Maritime and the smaller maps used to illustrate travel accounts in Prévost's Histoire Générale des Voyages.
