The design features a large central arch, smaller flanking niches, and multiple superimposed columns in the classical style. The print originated from a major Renaissance treatise on architectural theory and practice.

Sebastiano Serlio was an Italian architect, treatise writer, and printmaker of the late Renaissance. He is best known for his influential work, The Five Books of Architecture, which systematized the classical orders and provided pattern books for architects and builders across Europe, spreading Renaissance design principles.
