9959 Giovanni Domenico Cassini (1625–1712) - View of the Porto di Ripetta, Rome - Copperplate Engraving (Mid-18th Century)

This copperplate engraving presents an architectural view of the Porto di Ripetta and its baroque waterfront steps along the Tiber River in Rome. The detailed composition shows the grand riverfront façades, including a domed structure to the left, as well as numerous small figures and boats engaged in daily activity along the quayside and on the river. The engraving belongs to a series of Roman vedute depicting the city’s landmarks and waterfront architecture.
Giovanni Domenico Cassini was an Italian astronomer, engineer, and mathematician who was active in Rome before moving to France. He is chiefly remembered for his major contributions to astronomy, including the discovery of four satellites of Saturn and the Cassini Division, but also engaged in cartography and engineering. This work relates to the documentation of ancient and monumental architectural structures in Rome.
