This rare ethnobotanical engraving comes from François Valentijn’s monumental Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën, a comprehensive Dutch work on the East Indies. Numbered Plate No. XXXII, the composition presents a grid of 18 botanically styled illustrations depicting various trees, shrubs, and tropical plants native to Southeast Asia
The illustrations demonstrate the scientific intent behind Valentijn’s encyclopedic work, capturing useful or exotic flora with remarkable attention to form and taxonomy. The engravings were produced under the supervision of Dutch draftsmen and printmakers active in Amsterdam at the time of publication.
