163 Olof Rudbeck the Younger (1660–1740), after – Black Grouse Cock – Lithography

This striking, large-format print illustrates the Black Grouse Cock (Lyrurus tetrix). The magnificent male bird is depicted in profile, characterized by its deep black, glossy plumage, the distinctive lyre-shaped tail feathers, and the bright red, fleshy wattle above the eye. An inset shows a detailed view of the tail feathers. This work is taken from the famous Great Bird Book (Fogelboken), the remarkable, yet unpublished, manuscript of Swedish birds created in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Olof Rudbeck the Younger was a Swedish naturalist and physician, recognized as a pioneer in ornithology. Following an expedition to Lapland, he created the Great Bird Book, a collection of nearly 1,000 highly accurate and naturalistic watercolor drawings of Swedish birds, intended for publication but never formally printed during his lifetime. The illustrations served as the foundation for the revolutionary ornithological lectures he gave at Uppsala University and later influenced his student, Carl Linnaeus, in the naming and classification of species.
