This antique print depicts the Sukottyro, the historical European name given to the Babirusa (Babyrousa babyrussa), a wild pig native to Indonesia. The illustration highlights the animal's most peculiar features: the highly exaggerated, curved upper canine tusks that pierce the roof of the snout, giving it a fierce appearance. This zoological study comes from the section on Mammalia in the comprehensive multi-volume work, General Zoology, or Systematic Natural History, authored by George Shaw and printed in London. The engraving captures the early European scientific understanding of this unusual species, known for its unique dentition.

George Shaw was a highly influential English zoologist and botanist, and a co-founder of the Linnean Society of London. He served as the Assistant Keeper and later Keeper of the natural history department at the British Museum. His major scientific writings, including General Zoology and The Naturalist's Miscellany, were instrumental in cataloging and disseminating Linnaean nomenclature and information about global fauna during the transition to modern zoology.
