114 George Shaw (1751–1813) – Sukottyro (Babirusa) – Copperplate engraving (1800)
This antique print depicts the Sukottyro, the historical European name given to the Babirusa (Babyrousa babyrussa), a wild pig native to Indonesia. The illustration highlights the animal's most peculiar features: the highly exaggerated, curved upper canine tusks that pierce the roof of the snout, giving it a fierce appearance. George Shaw was a highly influential English zoologist and botanist, and a co-founder of the Linnean Society of London. He served as the Assistant Keeper and later Keeper of the natural history department at the British Museum. His major scientific writings, including General Zoology and The Naturalist's Miscellany, were instrumental in cataloging and disseminating Linnaean nomenclature and information about global fauna during the transition to modern zoology.
