158 François Valentijn – Exotic Birds: Flamingo, Ostrich, Crane – Engraving (1724)

This original copperplate engraving comes from François Valentijn’s monumental Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën, published in Amsterdam between 1724 and 1726. It features five exotic bird species labeled by number: 46 Roerhaan, 47 Flamingos Vogel (flamingo), 48 Kraanvogel (crane), 49 Struisvogel (ostrich), and 50 Jonke Struisvogel (young ostrich). The birds are presented in stylized, imagined landscapes inspired by colonial encounters in Asia and Africa, reflecting the 18th-century Dutch fascination with global zoology.
The work is attributed to the major Dutch natural history chronicle "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën" by François Valentijn, with engraving by Christiaan Friedrich Elliger. This visual documentation reflects both the scientific curiosity and the artistic conventions of the Dutch Golden Age, in which exotic marine life was studied for classification and illustrated with precision. Such plates were valuable tools in conveying the biodiversity of the East Indies to European audiences in the 18th century.
