This richly colored historical scene depicts the ceremonial presentation of the illuminated Talbot Shrewsbury Book to Queen Margaret of Anjou, wife of King Henry VI of England. The scene, a meticulous copy of a 15th-century miniature from the original manuscript, shows John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, kneeling in homage, wearing the robes of the Order of the Garter. The print vividly documents the opulent courtly dress, interior decoration, and the ritual surrounding the gift-giving of manuscripts among the aristocracy in the mid-15th century. This plate was published in Henry Shaw’s monumental work on historical costumes and material culture, Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries.
