This set of two zoological plates illustrates two small marsupial species native to the Americas. The left plate depicts the Cayopollin Opossum (Le Cayopollin) traversing a low wall near classical ruins. The right plate, titled The Female Marmosa (La Marmose Femelle), shows the mouse opossum seated, with its small young visible, demonstrating the animal's marsupial nature. The inclusion of these New World species, often against dramatic or ruin-filled backdrops, is characteristic of the Enlightenment-era effort to catalog global fauna. Both engravings were published in the extensive French natural history compendium, the Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière.

Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a celebrated French naturalist, mathematician, and philosopher whose Histoire Naturelle was one of the most ambitious scientific publications of the 18th century. As the King's Superintendent of the Royal Garden (Jardin du Roi), Buffon directed a vast project to describe and categorize the entire natural world, commissioning meticulous illustrations that were engraved by a large team of specialists.
