138 Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788) – Set of Two: Plates of Lampreys, Hairtails, and Unusual Fish Species – Engraving (Circa 1800)

Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a celebrated French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist of the Enlightenment. As the superintendent of the Jardin du Roi (King’s Garden), he undertook the monumental Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière, an ambitious encyclopedia of the natural world. Although the volumes on fish were published posthumously by his collaborator, Bernard Germain de Lacépède, the entire 44-volume collection is credited to Buffon, cementing his status as a key figure in modern natural history and classification.
