This colorful ethnographic figure study, titled Villageoise de l'Arabie heureuse, depicts a woman from the historical region of Arabia Felix (Yemen). The figure is dressed in distinctive checkered and patterned garments, including wide-sleeved robes and striped trousers, with a large sack slung across her back, suggesting she is carrying provisions. The print is set in a stylized landscape that includes sparse trees and flowering shrubs. This illustration originates from Encyclopédie des voyages (Encyclopedia of Voyages), a multi-volume French compendium designed to visually document the distinctive dress, customs, and appearance of peoples from across the globe in the late 18th century.

Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was a French writer, diplomat, and ethnographic compiler of the Enlightenment period. He is best known for devising and publishing the Encyclopédie des voyages, a monumental work that featured hundreds of plates illustrating the world’s inhabitants. Through this project, Grasset directed the production of thousands of visual records, aiming to create a systematic and comprehensive visual record of human cultures.
