This detailed engraving, titled "Le Sariguë Femelle" (The Female Opossum), depicts the marsupial carrying its young clinging to its body and tail in a rocky, semi-exotic landscape. The illustration captures the animal in a defensive or active pose, standing on a ledge overlooking a distant, faintly outlined architectural ruin. The print is sourced from the monumental French publication, Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière, a vast encyclopedic work on natural history published under the direction of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. The plate includes the original attribution to the artist: "De Seve Delin." (Jacques de Sève, delineavit) and "N. Sauvage Sculp." (engraved by).

Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon was a celebrated French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist. As the director of the Jardin du Roi (Royal Garden), his Histoire Naturelle was one of the most ambitious and influential scientific publications of the Enlightenment, setting new standards for both scientific description and artistic illustration of the natural world and shaping the ideas of naturalists for generations.
