This striking, originally hand-coloured folio engraving is from Marcus Elieser Bloch’s monumental work Ichthyologie, ou Histoire Naturelle Générale et Particulière des Poissons, published in Berlin, Paris, and London between 1785 and 1788. The illustration depicts the Pleuronectes Zebra (Sea-Zebra), a vibrantly patterned flatfish with alternating brown and cream bands and finely rendered scales and fins. Bloch's ichthyological plates are celebrated for their scientific accuracy, large format, and vivid colouring, representing a landmark in 18th-century natural history illustration.

Marcus Elieser Bloch was a German physician and naturalist, considered one of the most important ichthyologists of the 18th century. He devoted much of his life to cataloging fish species, combining scientific descriptions with visually captivating engravings. His Ichthyologie series documented over 200 new species and remains a cornerstone in the study of marine biology and zoological art.
