126 Magnus von Wright (1805–1868) – Chromolithograph – Asio Otus (Long-eared Owl) from Nordisk Fågelfauna (1920)

This beautifully detailed chromolithograph of Asio Otus, commonly known as the Long-eared Owl, is part of Magnus von Wright's influential work Nordisk Fågelfauna, published in 1920. The illustration portrays the owl perched gracefully on a branch, capturing its distinctive feather patterns and expressive orange eyes with precision and elegance. The chromolithography technique enhances the natural hues and textures, offering a lifelike representation of this nocturnal bird. This work was published in Finland in 1920.
Magnus von Wright (1805–1868) was the first taxidermist working with the vertebrate collections of Helsinki University. Starting out as a taxidermist in the 1820s, he stuffed birds for Societas pro Flora et Fauna Fennica, the oldest scientific society in Finland, and in 1845, became the taxidermist at the university's zoological museum. Von Wright made several study journeys to Stockholm and St. Petersburg, and even wrote a short manual on how to mount birds. Though a skilful taxidermist, his reputation, like that of his two brothers, Wilhelm and Ferdinand, rests on his skill as a zoological illustrator. In 1859 he published the first handbook on Finnish birds.
