"Capparis fabago portulacae foliis, Capparis flore albo, Capparis spinosa" This plate illustrates three distinct forms of the caper plant, showing their characteristic rounded foliage and intricate blossoms with prominent, delicate stamens in white and pink. The technical nature is a hand-coloured etching. It was published in the Phytanthoza Iconographia, a monumental four-volume botanical work printed in Regensburg. This series is famous for being one of the earliest and most successful applications of colour printing in botanical science, utilizing a specialized combination of etching and mezzotint.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanist who directed the court pharmacy in Regensburg. He spent much of his life amassing a vast collection of plant specimens and managing a massive team to produce one of the most comprehensive botanical records of the eighteenth century. He collaborated with skilled artists and engravers, such as Georg Dionysius Ehret and members of the Haid family, to produce over one thousand detailed plates. His work served as a vital bridge between earlier herbalist traditions and the emerging modern science of botany, celebrated for its high aesthetic and technical quality.
