12641 Adam van Noort (1562–1641) – Christ and Nicodemus – Engraving (1580–1641)

"A CHRISTO SOLYMA DOCTOR NICODEMVS IN VRBE" is an engraving depicting a nocturnal meeting between two figures seated at a table. The composition features a haloed figure representing Christ on the left, gesturing with one hand toward a candle while the other rests on a table covered with books and scrolls. To the right, Nicodemus is shown in heavy robes and a turban, leaning forward with his hand to his chest in a gesture of contemplation or questioning. The scene is illuminated by a single central candle, creating a strong chiaroscuro effect that highlights the facial expressions and the textures of the scholarly materials between them.
Adam van Noort was a prominent Flemish painter and draughtsman who operated a highly successful workshop in Antwerp. He is historically recognized as a primary teacher of Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens, serving as a vital link between the late Mannerist style and the emerging Baroque movement. His work focused on religious and mythological subjects, characterized by robust figures and a clear narrative clarity that became a hallmark of the Antwerp school during the early seventeenth century.
