12470 Marten de Vos (1532–1603) – Christ Healing the Woman with an Issue of Blood – Engraving (1585)
"Ecce mulier quae sanguinis fluxum patiebatur duodecim annis, accessit retro, et tetigit fimbriam vestimenti eius". This late sixteenth-century engraving illustrates the biblical miracle from the Gospel of Matthew where a woman, afflicted for twelve years, is healed by touching the hem of Christ's garment. The composition depicts Christ walking through a crowded street, surrounded by his disciples and onlookers, as the woman kneels behind him in an act of faith. The background features a detailed cityscape with Renaissance architecture, including a prominent tower and a palatial building. The work highlights the Flemish mastery of crowded narrative scenes and the use of expressive gestures to convey spiritual emotion. This plate was published in Antwerp as part of the series Thesaurus veteris et novi Testamenti.
Marten de Vos was one of the most prolific and influential Antwerp painters and draughtsmen in the generation after Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Following a period of study in Italy, he returned to the Netherlands and became a leading figure in the Counter-Reformation art movement, producing numerous altarpieces and designs for prints. His work is characterized by a graceful, Italianate style combined with a Northern attention to narrative clarity. De Vos provided hundreds of drawings for the great publishing houses of Antwerp, particularly for the Galle and Collaert families, which were distributed throughout Europe and significantly shaped religious iconography.
