12468 Marten de Vos (1532–1603) – The Sermon on the Mount – Engraving (1585)
"Videns Iesus turbas, ascendit in montem; et cum sedisset, accesserunt ad eum discipuli eius". This late sixteenth-century engraving illustrates the opening of the Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of Matthew. The composition depicts Christ seated atop a rocky outcrop, gesturing as he delivers his teachings to the twelve disciples gathered closely around him. In the mid-ground to the left, a larger multitude of people is shown ascending the slope to listen, while the background features an expansive landscape with a fortified city, a church tower, and distant mountains. The work is a characteristic example of the Antwerp school, utilizing fine cross-hatching to create volume and a clear spatial progression. This plate was published in Antwerp as part of the series Thesaurus veteris et novi Testamenti.
Marten de Vos was one of the most prolific and influential Antwerp painters and draughtsmen in the generation after Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Following a period of study in Italy, he returned to the Netherlands and became a leading figure in the Counter-Reformation art movement, producing numerous altarpieces and designs for prints. His work is characterized by a graceful, Italianate style combined with a Northern attention to narrative clarity. De Vos provided hundreds of drawings for the great publishing houses of Antwerp, particularly for the Galle and Collaert families, which were distributed throughout Europe and significantly shaped religious iconography.
