12451 Rigobert Bonne (1727–1794) – Map of the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands or Holland – Netherlands – Engraving (1780)
"Les Sept Provinces Unies des Pays-Bas, ou La Hollande; avec les Pays-Bas Autrichiens". This geographical map delineates the Dutch Republic and the Austrian Netherlands during the late eighteenth century. The engraving illustrates the complex coastal topography of the Low Countries, including the Zuiderzee and the delta of the Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt rivers. Political boundaries are shown for the various provinces, duchies, and seigniories, extending from the North Sea islands to the borders of the Holy Roman Empire and France. The composition includes a title block specifying the author as the Hydrographic Engineer of the Navy and features multiple scale bars in the lower left. This work was published in Paris as part of the Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre by the publisher Jean-Leonard Pellet in 1780.
Rigobert Bonne was a French cartographer and mathematician who held the prestigious position of Royal Hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine. He was responsible for producing highly accurate maritime charts and terrestrial maps that served both scientific and military purposes. Bonne is recognized for his significant contributions to the encyclopedic projects of the Enlightenment, including his collaboration with Guillaume Raynal. His maps are characterized by a refined aesthetic and a commitment to updated geographical data, influencing European cartography for several decades.
