12398 James Sowerby (1757–1822) – Botanical Study of Wych Elm (Ulmus glabra) – Hand-coloured etching (1810)

"Ulmus montana". This botanical study illustrates the reproductive and vegetative characteristics of the Wych Elm, showing a branch with maturing winged seeds known as samaras and a secondary branch with small reddish flowers that appear before the leaves. The plate features two large, serrated leaves with the characteristic asymmetrical base found in the genus Ulmus. Small anatomical dissections of the floral structure and seed are provided at the bottom. This work was published in London on January 1, 1810, as part of the extensive series English Botany, or Coloured Figures of British Plants, with Hints of their Characters. The series remains a landmark of British natural history, combining the artistic skill of Sowerby with the botanical expertise of James Edward Smith.
