41 Ulrich Tengler & Johann Albrecht - Large Woodcut - Layenspiegel - Rome - 1538

Large woodcut originates from the work ”Layenspiegel” by Ulrich Tengler, printed by Johann Albrecht, Strasbourg, 1538.
Ulrich Tengler (c. 1447–1511) was a German jurist and author, best known for his contributions to legal literature during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. He served as a city scribe in Nördlingen and as a landvogt (a regional legal official) in Höchstett. Tengler is most famous for his work Layenspiegel (also known as Laienspiegel), a significant legal compendium that helped to make Roman law more accessible to non-lawyers, such as clerks, notaries, and lower-level legal officials. This work was highly influential in Germany and went through numerous editions, playing an important role in the dissemination of legal knowledge during the time of the Reformation.
Tengler's Layenspiegel is a compilation of various branches of law, including civil, criminal, and public law, and was notable for being written in the vernacular German language, making it accessible to a broader audience. He aimed to educate "half-learned" people, such as clerks and legal assistants, providing them with practical legal knowledge. Tengler's work contributed to the development of legal terminology in German and was one of the earliest works to popularize Roman law in German-speaking regions.
