"Artocarpeae. R. Br." This hand-coloured engraving provides a comprehensive botanical study of the Artocarpeae tribe, which includes the breadfruit and jackfruit families. The central illustration depicts a sturdy woody branch supporting large, deeply lobed leaves and two distinct forms of syncarpous fruit: a smaller, rounded immature specimen and a large, oblong mature fruit with a textured, tuberculated surface. Surrounding the central figure are numerous detailed anatomical dissections, including floral clusters, seed cross-sections, and individual reproductive organs. Several elements are highlighted with delicate hand-colouring, including yellow floral parts and a longitudinal section of the fruit revealing the internal structure in shades of brown and green. This work was published in Erlangen as part of the Iconographia Familiarum Naturalium Regni Vegetabilis. The plate serves as a precise scientific record of mid-nineteenth-century botanical taxonomy, documenting the complex morphology of these significant tropical plants.

Adalbert Schnizlein was a prominent German botanist and pharmacist celebrated for his monumental contributions to plant iconography and systematics. Based in Erlangen, he served as a professor of botany and director of the local botanical garden, where he dedicated decades to the precise documentation of the vegetable kingdom. His most significant work, Iconographia Familiarum Naturalium Regni Vegetabilis, remains a definitive reference in botanical literature for its clarity and scientific rigor. Schnizlein was renowned for his ability to translate complex morphological data into clear, accessible illustrations that facilitated the study of plant families across Europe. His legacy is defined by a commitment to the fusion of artistic precision and empirical observation in the field of natural history.
