"Het Kasteel van Bruelis," "t Huys te Mael-stede," "t Slot van Elfsdyk," and "Het Kasteel te Baerlandt." This print features four distinct topographical views of noble estates in the province of Zeeland, Netherlands. The upper left illustrates the fortified manor of Bruelis with its gabled roof and surrounding wall. The upper right depicts Mael-stede, shown as a large house protected by a wide moat with figures hunting in the foreground. The lower left shows the castle of Elfsdyk, including a detailed inset of the tower, while the lower right displays the castle of Baerlandt with its extensive formal gardens and conical-roofed towers. These engravings were published in the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, printed in Middelburg by Johannes Meertens, serving as a vital record of the architectural heritage and social status of the Zeeland nobility in the late seventeenth century.

Mattheus Smallegange was a prominent Dutch historian and genealogist dedicated to chronicling the history of the Zeeland province. He spent much of his life compiling the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, an ambitious work that integrated historical narrative with hundreds of high-quality engravings of estates and city views. His efforts were supported by the local gentry, who commissioned views of their ancestral homes to be included in the volume. Although Smallegange struggled financially and faced delays in publication, his work remains a primary source for the historical topography and heraldry of the region.
