"t Kasteel van St. Maertens-Dyk" and "Slot tot Scavenisse." This print consists of two topographical views of noble estates in the province of Zeeland. The upper engraving depicts the Castle of Maartensdijk, shown as a substantial fortified structure with multiple towers and a bridge, set against a backdrop of the local town. The lower engraving illustrates the manor house of Scavenisse, featuring a symmetrically designed residence surrounded by extensive formal gardens, orchards, and decorative gating. These plates were published in the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland in Middelburg by Johannes Meertens. This significant historical work documented the geography, genealogy, and architecture of the region, providing a visual record of the Dutch landed gentry's estates during the late seventeenth century.
Mattheus Smallegange was a notable Dutch historian and genealogist who dedicated much of his life to chronicling the history of Zeeland. He is best remembered for his massive publication, the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, which remains a primary reference for the historical topography of the area. Smallegange collaborated with various skilled engravers to produce high-quality visual documentation of castles, city views, and heraldry. His efforts preserved the likeness of many architectural sites that have since been altered or destroyed, making his work invaluable to researchers of Dutch cultural heritage.
