This copper engraving depicts the biblical scene of Moses striking the rock at Horeb to bring forth water for the thirsty Israelites. Moses, leaning on his staff, stands beside the rock face, from which a stream of water gushes out. The dramatic composition is filled with the desperate figures of the crowd reaching for the miraculous water. The scene employs the dynamic figures and classicizing style characteristic of the mid-17th century Baroque period.

Nicolas Chaperon was a French Baroque painter and printmaker, originally from Châteaudun, who spent much of his career studying and working in Rome. He is recognized for his etchings and engravings, particularly his series documenting the biblical frescoes of Raphael in the Vatican, and for his own religious and mythological compositions, which demonstrated a strong command of classical form and theatrical expression.
