9997 Bernard de Montfaucon (1655–1741) - Studies of Ancient Egyptian Canopic Jars - Copperplate Engraving (Early 18th Century)
This copperplate engraving is an archaeological plate displaying four detailed views of Ancient Egyptian Canopic Jars, vessels used in funerary rites to hold internal organs. The vessels are adorned with human heads and elaborate hieroglyphic or pictorial scenes. The plate also features a separate bust of a woman. The print originated from a monumental historical and archaeological publication documenting the visual record of antiquity.
Bernard de Montfaucon was a French Benedictine monk, scholar, and paleographer. He is celebrated for his vast contributions to the study of classical and Egyptian antiquities, most notably his comprehensive and heavily illustrated multi-volume work, L'Antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures.
