This copperplate engraving depicts the dramatic Biblical event of Christ carrying the cross out of the city gates toward Calvary. The composition is highly detailed and crowded with figures, including soldiers leading the procession and onlookers reacting to the scene. The work is executed in the expressive Mannerist style typical of Flemish printmaking from this period.

Adriaen Collaert was an influential Flemish printmaker and publisher active in Antwerp during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He came from a notable family of engravers and specialized in detailed religious and allegorical subjects, often engraving the designs of leading contemporary artists like Maerten de Vos.
