9830 William Curtis (1746–1799) – Asiatic Crinum Lily (Crinum asiaticum) – Hand-colored copperplate engraving (1807)

This hand-colored copperplate engraving presents a dramatic botanical study of the Asiatic Crinum Lily, a large bulbous plant known for its striking inflorescence. The illustration is dominated by a dense cluster of spidery white flowers, characterized by their long, slender petals and prominent red and yellow stamens, sharply contrasted against the broad, dark green basal foliage. The print was published in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, a highly influential journal dedicated to the accurate and colorful documentation of exotic flora introduced to Britain.
William Curtis was an eminent English botanist, entomologist, and publisher of the 18th Century. He is celebrated for founding two of the most significant botanical publications of the time: the magnificent folio Flora Londinensis and the long-running Curtis's Botanical Magazine. Curtis was dedicated to popularizing botany and established a well-known botanical garden in London for public instruction.
