10065 Jan Sadeler I (1550–1600) – The Baptism of Christ with Emblematical Border – Copper engraving (1580)
This copper engraving depicts the biblical scene of the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan River, with Christ kneeling as John the Baptist administers the sacrament. The central event is framed by an elaborate Mannerist border featuring religious and allegorical symbols, including cartouches with scriptural quotes and a prominent depiction of the descending Holy Spirit. The dense, complex composition and fine linework are characteristic of Northern European religious printmaking of the late 16th century.
Jan Sadeler I was a highly influential Flemish engraver and print publisher during the late 16th century, born into the renowned Sadeler family of printmakers. He primarily worked in Antwerp, Munich, and Italy, specializing in translating the designs of major artists into finely detailed copper engravings. His work disseminated key religious and mythological themes throughout Europe, making him one of the foremost Mannerist printmakers.
