10011 Georges-Louis Le Rouge (1712–1790) – Map of Denmark, Brandenburg, and Saxony – Hand-colored engraving (1750)
This hand-colored engraving is a detailed regional map covering major territories of Northern Europe, including Denmark, the German principalities of Brandenburg and Saxony, the Duchies of Holstein and Mecklenburg, and the region of Pomerania. The map extends from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea and displays the intricate political boundaries, major cities, rivers, and topography of the area. The internal boundaries are delineated by hand-coloring, with the elaborate title presented in a decorative cartouche featuring putti.
Georges-Louis Le Rouge was a highly prolific French cartographer, engraver, and engineer who operated a prominent cartographic publishing house in Paris during the mid-to-late 18th century. He is best known for producing numerous comprehensive atlases, military maps, and collections of detailed city plans, based on the latest geographical observations, solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in French Enlightenment cartography.
